Covington Monumental Inscriptions
« on: Friday 13 December 19 22:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I'm wandering if anyone on the forum has access to Covington Graveyard records
Thomas Brown died in 1888 in Hillhead, Covington but I can't find his wife Elizabeth Affleck anywhere
She died between 1865 (birth of her last daughter) and 1888.    Thomas's Death shows he was a widower

I see that their family were born in Covington and Thankerton, Wiston and Roberton, Carmichael and Pettinain. Also that the ones registered in C and T and in W and R were also registered in Carmichael.

Can you be sure that any of them are buried in Covington?

Have you found any of them in a census?

Who registered the death?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I've checked the Covington and Thankerton MI's books but no trace of either (although there is an Affleck memorial in Thankerton)

Added : also nothing for Carmichael, Pettinain, Wiston or Roberton (although there are two Affleck memorials in Carmichael)

Just a thought -- these are all Churchyard Cemeteries the latter part of the 19th century was a bit late for Churchyard burials, unless the family already owned a plot there. (there are several much later burials of different families in the above churchyards)
Could (or would) this family have used one of the larger municipal Cemeteries ?

I'm not sure. I've checked the Lanarkshire memorial inscription book that I have but found nothing. Another brick wall.  Many thanks for your help

There is the death of an Elizabeth Brown, who died aged 53, at Carstairs in 1886.       I have Martin ancestors from the areas of Pettinain, Covington, Thankerton etc, and Carstairs is in the same area.      Do you know when she was born?    This Elizabeth Brown, going by the age she was when she died in 1886, would have been born about 1833.

What is the last census you have Elizabeth in?

Just for background here, from 1861, Elizabeth Affleck at home with parents:

William Affleck 74
Agnes Affleck 77
Eliza Brown 30 daughter domestic servant b. Carmichael
William Lawson 7 (possibly also son of Elizabeth, father a Duncan Lawson b. 24 Mar 1854)
Janet Brown 1 Covington b. Carmichael

Address: 18 Thankerton, Covington

Eldest daughter Janet married a John Dickson? Have you checked her marriage to see what it says about her mother?

From 1881:

John Dickson 22
Janet Dickson 21 b. Covington
Elizabeth Dickson 1
Agnes Brown 14 sister in law b. Carmichael

Address: Lyne (5th. Ploughman'S H.) Peebleshire

Can't see the family in 1871. Have you found them?
