Thank you for information found a great help.  Change of spelling for the surname did not help.  May I ask where on ancestry the seaman certificates could be found?  Thanks

helina

Royal Navy registers. But Im not finding the one Mabel Bagshaw did.

No - it's in the masters and mates certificates collection. Three entries - b Swansea 30 Dec 1844

1875 - passes his second mate exam in Liverpool. Address is  1 King St, Swansea

1877 - becomes a first mate. Same address. In between the two periods has been working on the Battle Axe out of Swansea  (possible a barque - definitely a sailing ship as the entry refers to the type of rig)

1893 - as previously posted . Definitely the same chap - same dob and the number of the lost certificate matches that issued in 1875. Appears to have been working as a second mate in the precious two years, on a steam ship out of Sunderland (called Haworth Castle, I think) and then from Cardiff (SS Saxon Bruton). The SS Catho appears to have stranded on its way to Genoa

BATTLE AXE official number 65545 Was a Swansea registered Barque. Her 1877 Crew Agreements appear to have been lost or destroyed.

Cannot find a vessel with the name HAWORTH CASTLE. There are two vessels with the name HAWORTH but built in 1912 and 1919 respectively. So not of any significance.

Cannot find a vessel with the name SAXON BRUTON. Could it be the Cardiff Registered vessel SAXON BRITON official number 87493

Cannot find a vessel with the name CATHO. Could it be the Cardiff Registered vessel CASTRO
official number 72537. She is listed in the 1893 edition of the Mercantile Navy List but not in 1894 and subsequent editions.
The Glasgow Herald 2/Sept/1893 reported that a vessel owned by Willis and Co. of Cardiff, with the name CASTRO was lost off Finisterre and landed at Liverpool by the Spanish Steamer SANTA DOMINGO. 17 saved.

From the Mercantile Navy List 1893

https://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/viewimages?year=1895&name=CASTRO&steamsail=Steam&year=1893+&submit=enter

The last Crew Agreement of CASTRO is available from Glamorgan Archives. Search with the ships official number.
