Stephen Robins Baptism
« on: Friday 13 December 19 04:50 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone can assist in helping me find the baptism record for Stephen Robins (Robbins/Robens).

The information I have is that he was born 8 May 1813 at Hastings, Sussex, England. However, I do not have any sources for this information, other than “family legend”

In 1839, he migrated to Australia with his wife Sarah Catt (Cate). He was described as a bricklayer, and she as a laundress. Once here, he did well for himself, and I have good records.

BUT, when and where was he baptised, and if possible when and where was he born.

If anyone can point me to where I can find this information, I would be very grateful

Family search has some records for Hastings

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&placeId=23298&query=%2Bplace%3A%22England%2C%20Sussex%2C%20Hastings%22&subjectsOpen=430912-50

I’ve looked at the rest of 1813 for All Saints and St Clements but didn’t notice any likely baptism (post May)  but don’t trust me!

You are researching the origins of Stephen ROBINS?

"...Once here, he did well for himself, and I have good records."

What do you know about the life of this family in Australia.....(NSW?).....?

Records for BDM events in NSW are informative. Naming patterns often appear....house / property names can be a clue to origins.......chain migration can be useful in connecting members of family.....

The information you have would be useful.

There is a Thomas and Elizabeth couple in Bexhill in 1841, age 88 & 82!

Ambitious to think they could be biological parents,  but perhaps ‘adoptive’? Also in house are Samuel and Emma both age 36 so born abt 1805

Thank you all for your interest and help.

Mckha489 I have tried to look at that information, but it keeps coming back as "unable to display search results due to technical difficulties" Also there does not seem to be much in the way of online information, as the majority of the FS information is on film.

wivenhoe He did remarkably well for a bricklayer, as per the Arrival records, but he was recorded as a stone mason a few years later, at his first daughters baptism. He accumulated a sizable property portfolio in the area just to the south of the CBD of Sydney. By 1858, he had four houses in the same street, with a gross annual value of £111. I have not found any names of the properties, just the city rates books.

Rosie99 I have his marriage 4 Jun 1838 at St Mary in the Castle, with his father as Thomas Robins a labourer.

Mckha489 That is the information on the Australian Archives Reel AO 1304

Rosie99 That is the only marriage I have been able to find regarding Thomas and Elizabeth in Sussex

Mckha489 I had not thought of the possibility of "adoptive". :-[ I have not been able to find any other information about the 'siblings"

Again, many thanks for your help.

There is a Thomas and Elizabeth couple in Bexhill in 1841, age 88 & 82!

Possible deaths as Roberts!
March 1847 Battle 7 244
Roberts, Elizabeth
age 84

Sep 1847 Battle 7 183
Roberts, Thomas
age 94

Burials at Bexhill St Peter
Elizabeth Roberts, 21 Mar 1847, age 84
Thomas Roberts, 25 Aug 1847, age 94

Little acknowledgement (if any at all) anywhere of Thomas Catt's second marriage in 1851

Or his brief will.
