Hi SL

Many thanks for this link to some reference material for 'Thomas Drysdale  - The Islay Herald' (who normally resided in Leith) I had not seen it before and will copy it into the Drysdale tree.

I also copied Vols 1-5 of 'The miscellany of the New Spalding club' from the Internet Archive which looks like it could be a good source for reference material on Scottish genealogy in general.

Thanks again and best regards

Thank you very much GR2.

The Scotlandspeople website record lists his death as being 30 September 1574, but I could not see anything on that image that resembled 'September' - I could see November and roman numeral dates in a few places but nothing else.

Your translation of this elderly Scottish document is much appreciated.

I'll let Scotlandspeople know so they can amend their records.

Best regards

Yes, it's very difficult to read but there appear to be 7 discrete entries/paragraphs on the page & each one contains "1574" in numerals.

Para number 4, starts I think with "Patrick Drisdale" - but I might be wrong.

Thanks & best regards

Hi all,
The image below contains the parish death record of Patrick Drisdale at Aberdeen on 30 September 1574? -  from Scotlandspeople.

I think it is the entry in the middle of the page. Can anybody read what this actually says?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Best regards

James Drysdale, the trusted servant of William Douglas of Lochlevin

James Drysdale, who was in Lochleven Castle at the time Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned there and who was singled out for harsh words in a letter by her in 1568/9 for saying he would like to put a sword to her heart*, had a life outside Lochleven Castle.

Source materials indicate that James was the father of  William Dryisdaill of Dollar, whose will dated 1600 is shown above.

Also, the 18-4-1565 birth record of one Kirsten Drysdeill, from the Scotlandspeople website, states:

"The 18th day James Drysdeill had a woman chyld born in fornication of Margaret Donaldson alias Whyt Wyndo baptizit and callit Kirsten." - Lochlevin in margin.

So it appears he was a bit of a rascal in his private life also!

- Life of Mary Queen of Scots, Volume 2 (of 2), by Henry Glassford Bell

A copy of the Scotlandspeople image of Kirsten's birth record is copied below:

Thanks once again to GR2 for his sterling work on these very difficult documents.

I have mentioned before that I had some 16th cent. hand written wills in old Scots and Latin, in fact I had 3 documents (2 from 1546 and this one from 1553) - I initially approached  a number of professional transcribers with this work but they all declined to take on this task.

They are all transcribed now, wholly due to GR2's unusual but worthy skill set and a lot of hard work on his part.

Very grateful for the help I have received.

Best regards

PS I don't have any more un-transcribed 16th cent. Scots/Latin documents and I do hope that I don't come across anything similar in my future research.

Hi GR2,

There was another will before it and another after it as far as I can tell.

I've posted the bits below.

Best regards

Thank you very very much GR2 - can I also ask if you can see any place names in there?

e.g. The old scots names for Tillicoultry, Westertoun, Balhartie, Coalsnaughton, Elistoun, Harviestoun, Shannock Hill, Sheardale, Drummy, Dollar.............

Best regards
