S S Carl - sank July 1918
« on: Wednesday 17 December 08 18:04 GMT (UK) »
A distant relative, Emlyn HARRY died on the 7th July 1918 on board the S S CARL according to the CWGC site.

We would welcome any information at all about the ship, on board which he served as a signaller RNVR - and died aged 18.

Many thanks in anticipation

Just a snippet (assuming it's the same ship) http://www.rootschat.com/links/053o/  and a possible service record if you wanted to take that route http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/rnvr.asp

Fantastic!!

Thank you both.  Casa we have downloaded the service record which tells us that the vessel was Danish, so that sounds as though it might well be the same as the record Tati found.

One happy cousin here!

That's very kind of you both - thank you!

Our relative's father remembered answering the door when he was about four years of age - to someone bearing the news of his eldest brother's death.

Although the family has a picture of Emlyn, they never really knew the details of how and where he was lost.  Now they do.

I might do a spot more searching tonight to see if I can find a picture of the Carl but I am more than content with what's been located so far.  I'm especially chuffed every time I boast to a "newbie" how great Rootschat is - and you come up trumps.

Gold stars all round!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I shall add this pic of the Ship's Bell of the Vessel,  S.S. Weybridge a Trading Ship Vessel owned locally, I obtained this in the start of the 80's, on a stopover Trip from Dubai to Pakistan renewing my UAE VISA, my wife Janet & I paid for the item and had doubts about it reaching our home at Dubai, a great surprise when a couple of chaps turned up at our home & unloaded our Bell & some other ship artifacts from a rickety handcart after a Dhow voyage. S.S. Weybridge was dismantled at Gadani Beach, 40 miles from Karachi
